What is Family Law?

Family Law is a broad term that encompasses the many legal issues that can arise within domestic relationships. While divorce is probably is the most common association, Family Law may also relate to legal conflicts between parties who have never been married to one another. For instance, an unmarried man may petition the court to establish paternity of a child. An unmarried mother may petition the court to establish the child support obligations of each parent. Family Law also includes circumstances in which a person seeks to establish custody and care of a third-party, such as with adoptions or guardianships.
